Calcitrene is a prescription topical cream used to treat plaque psoriasis, a condition in which excess skin builds up and forms rough, hard, and scaly patches. In normal skin, the cells grow in the deepest layer of the skin and are slowly pushed to the surface, a process that usually takes about 4 weeks. In plaque psoriasis, skin cells grow so fast that this process takes only a few days.
While there are treatments for the symptoms of plaque psoriasis, such as relieving dryness or removing excess skin, Calcitrene is intended to slow down the rapid growth of skin cells. Its active ingredient, calcipotriene, is a form of vitamin D3, a substance that slows down skin growth.
Calcitrene is applied to the affected area twice daily. Calcitrene should not be ingested, so immediately wash your hands after applying the cream.
The most common side effects of Calcitrene are largely skin reactions on the treated area, such as irritation, itching, burning, swelling, rash, pain, or a worsening of the psoriasis. Calcitrene can be a poison if swallowed, so always thoroughly wash your hands after applying Calcitrene. Allergic reactions are rare and include, but are not limited to, itching, hives, redness, and trouble breathing. Discontinue Calcitrene if you experience allergic reactions.
This is not a complete list of possible side effects. You should consult with your prescribing physician about your concerns and questions about side effects.
