Camrese is a combination of hormone medication used to prevent pregnancy. It contains levonorgestrel, a progestin hormone, and ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen hormone. Together, these two female hormones primarily work by preventing a woman from going through ovulation during your menstrual cycle. Ovulation is the process of the female eggs being released from the ovaries, a process vital for pregnancy to occur. This drug also changes the mucus in the cervix, making it thicker. Thick cervical mucus makes it difficult for sperm to reach an egg to fertilize it. Changes in the lining of the uterus are also made when taking this drug to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body.
Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills like Camrese may make help in regularizing your menstrual cycle, decrease blood loss, and painful periods, decrease your risk of ovarian cysts, and also treat acne.
You should not use Camrese if you have untreated hypertension, heart disease, coronary artery disease, diabetes-related circulation problems, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, severe migraine headaches, if you also take certain hepatitis C medication, if you will have major surgery, if you smoke and are over 35 years old, or if you have ever had a heart attack, a stroke, a blood clot, jaundice caused by pregnancy or birth control pills, or cancer of the breast, uterus, cervix, or vagina.
Some common side effects associated with Camrese include mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, breast tenderness or swelling, nipple discharge, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, changes in weight or appetite, problems with contact lenses, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your menstrual periods, and decreased sex drive.
This is not a complete list of all Camrese side effects so talk to your doctor for medical advice about other side effects that can occur. You may report side effects to the FDA.
