How to take Clenpiq

  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed.

  • Split-dose dosing:

    • Take the first dose the evening before your colonoscopy.

    • Take the second dose the next day, in the morning or at least 5 hours before your colonoscopy.

    • If you have severe bloating, distension, or stomach pain after taking the first dose, you may need to wait until your symptoms improve before taking the second dose.

  • To use Clenpiq:

    • Clenpiq is ready to drink. One bottle is equal to one dose.

    • You will need two doses of this medicine. Drink all of this medicine straight from the bottle.

    • Clenpiq is a clear solution that may contain visible particles. 

  • Drink at least five 8-oz cups of clear liquids after the first dose of Clenpiq and at least four 8-oz cups of clear liquids after the second dose. 

  • It’s recommended to drink a variety of clear liquids. Examples include balanced electrolyte solutions, black coffee or tea, plain jello, clear broth, clear juices without pulp, ginger ale and other sodas, and frozen juice bars. Do not drink anything colored red or purple. 

  • Do not consume solid food, dairy products, or alcohol on the day before the colonoscopy and until after the colonoscopy is finished.

  • Be sure to stop all consumption of liquids at least 2 hours before your procedure.

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not refrigerate or freeze Clenpiq.

What to do if you miss a dose of Clenpiq

  • Contact your doctor if you miss a dose of Clenpiq. Depending on the timing of your missed dose, they may recommend that you take the dose. Or they may have to reschedule your procedure.

Clenpiq contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use it if you’ve had an allergic reaction to citric acid, magnesium oxide, sodium picosulfate, or any of the other ingredients in the drug.

  • People who have severe kidney problems and stomach or bowel problems (including blockage, perforation, toxic colitis or toxic megacolon, or problems emptying food or liquids from the stomach) also should not take Clenpiq.

  • Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

    • Kidney disease

    • Heart rhythm problems

    • Heart failure

    • Recent heart attack

    • Trouble swallowing

    • Ulcerative colitis

    • Inflammatory bowel disease

    • History of seizures

  • This medicine may cause the following problems:

    • Heart rhythm problems (including arrhythmia)

    • Seizures

    • Kidney problems

    • Stomach or bowel problems (including ulcers, blockages, and holes in the wall of your gut)

  • This medicine may cause dehydration. Drink extra liquids before, during, and after you take this medicine.

  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

  • Seizures

  • Abnormal heartbeat

  • Kidney problems

  • Bowel problems, including severe abdominal pain or bleeding from the rectum

  • Decrease in how much or how often you urinate

  • Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting

  • Confusion, weakness, muscle twitching

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
