Crinone is an FDA-approved female hormone medication used to restore menstrual cycles in women who have not yet reached menopause but have stopped having periods because their bodies lack progesterone. Crinone is also used in fertility treatments as part of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) for women who are unable to get pregnant due to a lack of natural progesterone.
There are two strengths of Crinone. The 4 percent formulation is used to restore menstrual cycles. The 8 percent formulation is used as part of assisted reproductive technology for infertility, or for people who have not responded to the 4 percent formulation. Crinone should only be used vaginally. Do not apply this medication to any other part of your body. The dosage of Crinone varies by indication and response to treatment. Your doctor can assess your medical history and recommend the appropriate dose for your specific condition.
Common side effects of Crinone may include cramps, bloating, stomach pain, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, increased appetite, joint pain, and pain around the vaginal area. Other common side effects include mood changes/mood swings, sleep problems, breast enlargement, and low libido. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor immediately.
You may experience vaginal discharge that contains little balls of white gel. This is a common and harmless side effect. However, if you develop itching, odor, or unusual vaginal discharge, you should notify your doctor right away.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are very unlikely, but you should seek medical attention if symptoms of a serious allergic reaction occur. Rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, and severe dizziness are all symptoms of an allergic reaction that require emergency medical attention.
Serious side effects can occur. Crinone may cause clots to form, which can be serious or life-threatening. Get medical help right away if any of these symptoms occur: shortness of breath, chest or calf pain, severe headache or vomiting, dizziness or faintness, vision or speech changes, arm or leg weakness or numbness, or if you are coughing blood. This is not a full list of Crinone side effects, and others may also occur while you are taking this medication. Check with your healthcare professional before using this medication for any additional information and to ensure that you're aware of all risks and benefits involved.
