Ddavp is a brand-name prescription drug with desmopressin as the active ingredient. It is available as a tablet, injection, nasal spray, and nasal solution. Generic Ddavp in all these forms is manufactured by a host of generic manufacturers. Other brand-name alternatives in various formulations include Minirin, Octostim, Nocdurna, and Stimate. Search the SingleCare website or app for these brand names or for generic desmopressin if you need more information or free savings coupons for your prescription.
Ddavp is a prescription drug used to treat diabetes insipidus (too much water in the urine), nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting), excessive thirst or urination after a head injury or surgery, or for hemophilia A or mild to moderate von Willebrand disease, inherited conditions in which the body does not properly form blood clots, leaving the patient at risk for excessive bleeding.
The active ingredient in Ddavp, desmopressin, both reduces the amount of water eliminated through the urine (antidiuretic) and improves the body's ability to form blood clots (hemostatic agent).
Ddavp is similar to the hormone, vasopressin, which acts by attaching to certain cells in the kidney and stimulates small tubes in the kidneys to reabsorb water back into the body. Ddavp also stimulates the release of a protein, called a clotting factor, that is critical to the process of blood clot formation.
Ddavp is available as a tablet, injection, nasal spray, and nasal solution (rhinal tube).
The dosage will vary based on the medical condition, the patient's needs, and their response to Ddavp.
Most patients prescribed Ddavp rhinal tube (nasal solution) will be unfamiliar with this mode of delivery. Ddavp comes in a dropper bottle and is injected into a plastic tube (rhinal tube) with dose markings. When it is filled to the proper dose, the larger opening is placed in the nose and the other in the mouth. The patient (or parent) blows into the tube to spray Ddavp into the nose.
For bleeding disorders (hemophilia A or mild to moderate von Willebrand disease), Ddavp is given to patients during bleeding incidents or before or after surgery. Before you take Ddavp, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and all of the medications you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
Common side effects of Ddavp include but are not limited to flushing, headache, stuffy nose, nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, cough, bloody nose, and changes in blood pressure. Allergic reactions to Ddavp are extremely rare but symptoms of hives, difficulty breathing, and/or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat require emergency medical attention.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
