Soliqua is a brand-name drug. Insulin glargine and lixisenatide are the active ingredients contained in Soliqua. No generic version of Soliqua is currently available.
Soliqua is a prescription drug that is used to improve blood sugar levels in adults diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes causes the body to develop insulin resistance or deficiency. Insulin is normally produced in the pancreas and is responsible for providing cells with sugar to create energy. In patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, their pancreas may be unable to produce the required insulin.
With insulin glargine and lixisenatide as active ingredients, Soliqua manages blood sugar levels. Soliqua is a subcutaneous solution injected into the skin to help the pancreas release more insulin to maintain low blood sugar levels. Soliqua also delivers blood sugar to the muscles to properly store glucose.
Before taking Soliqua, you should have a medical consultation with your healthcare provider to see if Soliqua is right for you. Soliqua is often recommended to be taken along with having a balanced diet and exercise. Your healthcare professional should provide medical advice on dosages and proper safety instructions.
If you have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, it is not recommended for you to take Soliqua. You should provide your doctor with a list of all your medical conditions and share information on any medications you may be taking. You should inform your doctor if you have taken Lantus or Toujeo. These brand-name diabetic medications can harm your health when combined with other diabetic medications.
The most common side effects when using Soliqua are nausea, diarrhea, headache, weight gain, and stuffy or runny nose. If you experience an allergic reaction such as shortness of breath or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, you should seek medical help as soon as possible. Some life-threatening side effects are hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), kidney failure, kidney problems, heart failure, and hypokalemia. Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of these side effects.
There are other side effects of Soliqua not mentioned here, so speak to your doctor if you experience these or other side effects.
Soliqua is only FDA-approved for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is not indicated for weight loss. Soliqua is the combination of insulin glargine and lixisenatide, a GLP-1 analogue. Weight gain is known to be associated with insulin glargine as a stand-alone therapy. The delayed gastric emptying effect of lixisenatide may help control cravings and minimize the weight gain associated with insulin glargine, but the use of Soliqua has not shown any significant weight loss overall.
While there is limited data comparing Soliqua directly to Ozempic, there is data comparing the GLP-1 receptor agonists associated with these commercial products. The GLP-1 RA in Ozempic, known as semaglutide, has been shown to outperform the GLP-1 RA in Soliqua, lixisenatide, in head-to-head comparisons. It would be important to consider the convenience of a single injection containing insulin glargine with a GLP-1 RA versus having to inject a GLP-1 RA separately as you would with Ozempic combined with an insulin of choice. Both Soliqua and Ozempic have been proven effective in diabetes management.
