What is Definity?

Definity (perflutren) is an injectable cardiovascular ultrasound contrast agent comprised of lipid-coated echogenic microbubbles filled with octa-fluoro propane gas that enhances clinicians' view of the left ventricle of the heart during an echocardiogram to aid with diagnosis.

Definity is made from human plasma (part of the blood) which may contain viruses and other infectious agents. The plasma is then tested and treated to reduce the risk of it any infections being present, however, the possibility of disease transmission is still there, though low. Talk with your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication. Definity is commonly injected into your vein through an IV. This procedure should always be done by a healthcare professional in a health facility.

What are the side effects of Definity?

Some common side effects you may experience after being treated with Definity include headache, dizziness, flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling), nausea, chest pain, pain in your side or lower back, or pain, swelling, or irritation where the injection was given.

Fatal reactions are rare and might happen while you are receiving the injection or just shortly afterward. Let your caregiver know immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseated, light-headed or short of breath, or if you have a severe headache, pounding in your ears, chest pain, fast or slow heartbeats, wheezing, or shallow breathing.
