Mesalamine belongs to a class of drugs called aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory agents. It can also be used to help prevent symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring. Mesalamine works by reducing the swelling and inflammation of cells in the colon.

Mesalamine is available in different brands, each delivering different doses of medication. Some Mesalamine formulations are used by adults only, and some can also be used by children five years and older. The pill should be taken whole (and not split, chewed, or crushed) to allow the drug to be properly released into the colon.
