Denavir is a topical prescription cream used to treat symptoms of the herpes simplex virus, specifically cold sores. Denavir helps to heal the sores, and reduce tingling, pain, burning, and itching of sores and blisters. Denavir's ingredient is penciclovir topical. It belongs to a class of drugs known as antivirals.
This cream should only be used on the lips and face. Denavir works by stopping the growth of the herpes virus. For the best results, apply the Denavir cream as soon as you experience symptoms of a developing cold sore. These symptoms include tingling, redness, itching, or a bump. Denavir is usually applied every 2 hours while awake.
Denavir should not be used to cure herpes or prevent cold sores. This prescription cream cannot prevent the infection from spreading. The duration of this therapy is generally four days in adults and children 12 years and older.
The most common side effects of Denavir are application site reactions like redness, burning, stinging, and numbness. Contact your healthcare provider if these side effects are too uncomfortable, as he or she may have recommendations to avoid or reduce discomfort from side effects. You should not use Denavir if you are allergic to penciclovir. This is not a complete list of side effects. It is recommended that you consult your healthcare professional before using Denavir. You can ask about these and other side effects or symptoms of an allergic reaction.
