Although it doesn't happen often, some doctors may actually prescribe an over-the-counter medication. If you have a prescription for an OTC drug, insurance might cover it. You'll have to ask your pharmacist if your insurance coverage applies to Abreva. However, even if your healthcare plan doesn't get you a discount, your SingleCare discount card will. Present your card to the pharmacist and reduce the cost of generic Abreva to $17.42 for 1, 2gm of 10% tube.
Like most insurance plans, Medicare typically covers prescription drugs—not over-the-counter medicines, like Abreva. Since Abreva is not likely covered by your healthcare plan, you'll want to use coupons to save money. Fortunately, SingleCare has several coupons for Abreva that you can use every time you need a refill.
The generic version of Abreva cold sore cream is called docosanol. There are also other OTC products indicated for cold sores such as Zilactin-L (benzyl alcohol), Herpecin-L (dimethicone with sunscreen), and Orajel (benzocaine), but the Abreva product is the only cold sore medicine shown to shorten the healing time of cold sores. Ask your pharmacist which cold sore treatment is best for your condition.
Abreva (docosanol) can be used to expedite the healing of cold sores and decrease symptoms of fever blisters. These symptoms can be painful and include tingling, burning, and itching. Abreva blocks herpes simplex—the virus that causes cold sores—and prevents it from spreading. Do not mistake Abreva cold sore treatment as a cure for herpes or prevention of spreading the infection to someone else.
Abreva is an FDA-approved topical cream that's only available in 10% strength. Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. These directions usually mention the importance of washing and drying your hands before and after application. You may apply Abreva up to five times a day or every three to four hours. If you use cosmetics, wait to apply make-up until after you've applied Abreva and make sure to use a separate applicator than the rest of your face. Cold sores spread easily, so avoid physical contact with others and wash your hands frequently. Do not use Abreva to treat canker sores (inside the mouth), shingles, or genital herpes.
Redness and swelling may occur when you apply Abreva for the first time, but you should contact a healthcare professional if those symptoms persist. An allergic reaction to Abreva is rare but possible. You should seek medical attention immediately if you believe you're having an allergic reaction. Ask your pharmacist for a full list of possible side effects.
