Elimite is a prescription topical cream that treats scabies (seven-year itch), an infestation of the skin Sarcoptes scabies, or scabies mites, a very tiny animal similar to spiders and scorpions. The female scabies mites burrow into the skin to lay eggs, which then hatch and feed off skin cells in their larval stage. The symptoms of scabies, rash, and itching, are allergic reactions to the mite, eggs, or larva in the skin. A typical scabies infection may only involve one or two dozen animals, but it can cause symptoms all over the body.
The active ingredient in Elimite, permethrin, is an insecticide that does not directly kill the mites. Instead, permethrin paralyzes the mites. Unable to function, they eventually die in a few days.
Elimite is self-administered and applied once as a cream over the entire body from the scalp to the feet. Elimite is showered off after eight to 14 hours.
Most side effects of Elimite occur on the skin where it has been applied and include burning, stinging, itching, redness, skin rash, tingling, and numbness. Allergic reactions are rare, but you should discontinue Elimite if you notice a rash, hives, swelling, or any other sign of an allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
