What is Permethrin?

Permethrin is a medication used to treat head lice and scabies. The 1% lotion is available over-the-counter and is used to treat head lice, while the 5% cream is available by prescription only and is used to treat scabies, a skin infestation caused by mites that burrow into the skin that can cause itching and irritation. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as pyrethrins and works by paralyzing and killing the mites and their eggs.

Permethrin is intended for use on the skin and hair only. Follow the directions provided on the product label or instructions from your healthcare provider. Avoid getting this medication in your nose, eyes, vagina, or mouth.. If accidental contact occurs with any of these areas, wash thoroughly with water.

For head lice, the 1% lotion is typically applied to washed, towel-dried hair, and rinsed off after the recommended amount of time. For scabies, the 5% cream is typically applied to the entire body from the neck down, including under the fingernails and toenails and within skin folds, and left on for 8 to 14 hours before being washed off.

Although Permethrin may kill all the lice and mites on your body, itching may continue to occur for several weeks after treatment, particularly when treating scabies. Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms persist or worsen after treatment.

What are the side effects of Permethrin?

The use of Permethrin may lead to unwanted side effects such as skin irritation, swelling, redness, and itching at the application site. Mild burning and tingling may also occur. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if any of these effects persist or worsen.
