Felbamate belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. Epileptic seizures are caused by the repetitive, overexcited, and abnormal firing of nerve cells in the brain, usually triggered by a situation or other stimulus. Felbamate prevents the repetitive firing of nerves and so reduces the brain's excitability and prevents a seizure from spreading to other parts of the brain.
Felbamate is taken as a tablet or oral suspension.
The most common side effects of Felbamate include, but are not limited to, headache (in about 1 in 3 patients), nausea (in about 1 in 3 patients), vomiting, upset stomach, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sleepiness, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, changes in weight, pimples, runny nose, blurred vision, and changes in taste.
