What is Felbatol?

Felbatol is a brand-name prescription drug that controls partial seizures in patients with epilepsy, a nervous system disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, or general seizures in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Because of the potential for hazardous and life-threatening side effects to the blood or liver, Felbatol is only used for severe epilepsy when other therapies have failed.

Felbatol belongs to a class of drugs called anticonvulsants drugs. Epileptic seizures are due to repetitive, random, and overexcited firing of nerve cells in the brain. These are usually triggered by a perception, situation, or some other stimulus. Felbatol prevents the repetitive firing of nerves and so reduces the brain's excitability and prevents a seizure from spreading to other parts of the brain.

Felbatol is taken as a tablet or oral suspension in divided doses three to four times a day.
