What are the most common male health problems?

Heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries are the three leading causes of death in men, according to the CDC. Diabetes and suicide are also more prevalent in men than in women. Men also face sex-specific issues like erectile dysfunction and low testosterone.

Men may be more susceptible to these conditions than women due to lifestyle factors like higher alcohol consumption and smoking rates, being less likely to seek preventive care, and having an increased risk of occupational exposures (i.e., chemicals, UV light).

The good news: You can reduce your risk of most of these conditions by following a heart-healthy diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, quitting nicotine, getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night, and scheduling regular checkups.

What percentage of men experience hair loss?

Hair loss is a natural part of the aging process. Two-thirds of men experience some degree of noticeable hair loss by 35, according to the American Hair Loss Association, and about 85% of men will have significant hair loss by age 50. A quarter of men with male pattern baldness begin to lose hair by age 21. 

There are only two FDA-approved treatments for hair loss (finasteride and minoxidil), but other medications may be used off-label. Note: Finasteride occasionally causes sexual side effects like erectile dysfunction and reduced sex drive.

How common is ED?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is very common, affecting up to 77% of men in the world. ED can be caused by or exacerbated by other health conditions (such as diabetes, depression, and obesity), medications (hair loss meds, anxiety medication, antidepressants, and more), and lifestyle factors (smoking). 

It’s important to consult a healthcare provider about ED. Although there are medications available, you may be able to treat ED by switching to a different medication or addressing an underlying condition.

What is a healthy testosterone level for men?

Healthy testosterone levels for adult men range from 350 to 750 nanograms per deciliter, according to Baylor University Medical Center

One of the primary causes of low testosterone is age, but other reasons for low T include sleep apnea, injury to the testes, dysfunction of the pituitary gland, metabolic syndrome, chemotherapy or radiation treatment, genetic conditions, certain medications, HIV/AIDS, and even some foods.

Testosterone replacement therapy is available and usually covered by insurance when prescribed for low T.

What is a healthy blood pressure for men?

Healthy blood pressure levels are below 120/80 mmHg and typically above 90/60 mmHg, according to the American Heart Association

Half of male adults have high blood pressure in the U.S., according to the CDC. Following the DASH diet, reducing alcohol and caffeine, exercising regularly, losing weight (if overweight), eliminating nicotine, and getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night are just some natural ways to lower blood pressure.

If natural remedies don’t lower your blood pressure levels enough, you may need medication. Fortunately, many BP meds are available as affordable generics, and they’re almost always covered by insurance.

What is a healthy BMI for men?

Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your body weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. A BMI of 19-24 is considered healthy, 25-29 is classified as overweight, and a BMI of 30 or higher indicates obesity. Nearly 40% of men aged 20 years and older have obesity, according to the CDC. Getting your weight into a healthy range may help to lower the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease. A healthy low-carb diet has been found to be more effective for weight loss in men than a low-fat diet, according to the International Journal of Obesity. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. What vitamins should men take?

The efficacy of vitamins isn’t well-established. That said, there is some evidence that certain supplements can help a variety of health conditions, including hypertension, heart health, high cholesterol, and even erectile dysfunction.
