What is Flucytosine?

Flucytosine is an antifungal medication used to treat severe yeast infections caused by certain types of fungus. It can treat serious fungal infections of the skin, lungs, blood, heart, urinary tract, and central nervous system. Flucytosine is sometimes prescribed with another drug, called amphotericin B.

Flucytosine belongs to a class of drugs called antifungals that work by interfering with vital cellular processes in the yeast.

Flucytosine slows the growth of Candida, which may infect the heart, lungs, blood, and urinary tract; and Cryptococcus, which infects the lungs, brain (meningitis), and other organs.

Flucytosine is taken as a capsule every six hours. Because nausea and vomiting are so commonly experienced, it may be necessary to take each dose a little bit at a time over a 15-minute period (if more than one capsule is required per dose). Each dose should be taken with an 8-ounce glass of water. Take Flucytosine for the full prescribed length of time, even if you start to feel better. Do not stop taking Flucytosine early unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so. Consult your healthcare provider on how you should take Flucytosine. Before taking Flucytosine, review your medical conditions and history with your provider. Flucytosine should be used with extreme caution in people with kidney problems. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, and any vitamins or supplements. Keep Flucytosine out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Flucytosine?

The most common side effects of Flucytosine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, chest pain, dry mouth, rash/itching, and fatigue.

Serious side effects may occur. They can include kidney failure, liver problems, cardiac or respiratory arrest, stomach bleeding, psychosis, low platetet levels, and bone marrow damage.

Mental and mood changes include confusion, hallucinations, seizures, and loss of coordination.

Allergic reactions are very rare, but get emergency medical help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling. This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
