Fosteum Plus is a prescription medical food formulated to help build bone density for women at risk for osteoporosis (bone loss) during and after menopause (or women who have had their ovaries surgically removed). Fosteum Plus contains vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, genistein (an isoflavone), zinc, and vitamin K2.
Osteoporosis is a condition where calcium is reabsorbed from the bones back into the body faster than the body makes new bone. Calcium and phosphate are used to make bone, and vitamin D helps the body absorb both from food. Genistein increases bone mineral density. Zinc helps with bone formation. Vitamin K2 increases the body's use of calcium in bone formation.
Common side effects of Fosteum Plus are minor and rarely experienced. These include nausea or upset stomach. Allergic reactions are rare and usually are reactions to the inactive ingredients. Discontinue use of Fosteum Plus and get emergency medical care at any sign of an allergic reaction such as itching, rash, hives, or trouble breathing.
