Trijardy XR is a brand name drug made by Boehringer Ingelheim. There is no generic version of Trijardy XR at this time.
Trijardy XR is a medication used in adults with Type 2 diabetes. This medicine is used, along with diet and exercise, to control blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. It can also lower the risk of death from heart attack, heart failure, or stroke in adult patients with Type 2 diabetes who also have heart disease. Trijardy XR is not used to treat Type 1 diabetes.
Trijardy XR contains three ingredients: empagliflozin, linagliptin, and metformin. Empagliflozin is classified as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and helps eliminate sugar through the kidneys (in the urine). Linagliptin is classified as a DPP-4 inhibitor. It works by increasing insulin (which helps lower blood sugar levels) and decreasing glucagon (glucagon increases blood sugar, so decreasing glucagon helps to control blood sugar). Metformin works by decreasing the amount of sugar made in the liver, decreasing the amount of sugar that is absorbed, and improving insulin sensitivity.
Trijardy XR is available as extended-release tablets containing empagliflozin, linagliptin, and metformin in the following doses:
5 mg/2.5 mg/1000 mg
10 mg/5 mg/1000 mg
12.5 mg/2.5 mg/1000 mg
25 mg/5 mg/1000 mg
Trijardy XR is usually taken once daily in the morning, with a meal. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet. Let your healthcare provider know if you have difficulty swallowing the tablet.
Part of the tablet’s shell may appear in your bowel movements. This is normal and does not mean the medication is less effective.
Ask your healthcare provider how often and when you should check your blood sugar, and what to do if your blood sugar is too low or too high. You should wear a medical alert identification that notifies first responders you have diabetes in the event of an emergency.
Common side effects of Trijardy XR may include upper respiratory infection, urinary tract infection, stomach problems, headache, rash, and vitamin B12 deficiency. One ingredient in this medication, metformin, can induce ovulation. This can result in unintended pregnancy. If you do not wish to become pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about effective birth control methods.
Serious allergic reactions are rare. Seek emergency medical help if you have hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. You should also get emergency medical help if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis (muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, irregular heartbeat). Trijardy XR can cause serious infections around the vagina or penis. Get medical help immediately if you have a fever, burning, itching, discharge, odor, pain, redness, or swelling around the genital or rectal area.
If you have severe stomach pain, vomiting, tiredness, or difficulty breathing, stop taking this medicine and call your healthcare provider immediately.
Other side effects may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and a full list of side effects.
Trijardy XR is not safe for everyone, so before taking it, talk to your doctor about any medical conditions you have as well as your medical history. If you are allergic to any ingredient in Trijardy XR or any similar drugs, you should not take Trijardy XR. Others who should not take Trijardy XR include individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people with Type 1 diabetes, and people who are dehydrated. There are also other conditions where it would not be appropriate to take Trijardy XR, or where risks and benefits must be considered, so talk with your healthcare provider for professional medical advice.
Before taking Trijardy XR, tell your healthcare provider about all your medications, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
You should not mix alcohol with Trijardy XR. Doing so increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
Some drug interactions include:

Trijardy XR is not FDA-approved for weight loss. However, patients may experience weight loss while taking Trijardy XR, especially if they follow their healthcare provider’s diet and exercise recommendations.
When choosing an appropriate drug, there are many factors to consider. One significant factor is that Ozempic is a once-weekly injectable medication, while Trijardy XR is an oral medication. Some people may prefer taking oral medication, while others may prefer an injectable drug only used once a week. There are other considerations too, such as the patient's medical conditions and the medications the person takes.
There are no studies that compare these medications directly. You can consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on which medication is best for you, taking into account your individual medical history.
