Fusion Plus is a prescription iron and folate supplement for people with both iron deficiency anemia and folate deficiency. The active ingredients in Fusion Plus are ferrous fumarate, polysaccharide iron complex, folic acid, vitamin C, and B-complex vitamins. Fusion Plus is a prescription iron supplement that treats iron deficiency anemia and folate deficiency due to extended convalescence, prolonged menstrual bleeding, excessive blood loss, pregnancy, puberty, or advanced age. It also treats iron deficiency anemia and vitamin C deficiency when these problems are also associated with chronic illness or metabolic stress that also requires vitamin B supplementation.

Fusion Plus contraindications

  • High-dose iron supplements are not safe for everyone.

  • Do not use Fusion Plus if you have:

    • Known allergies to iron supplements

    • Hemochromatosis (excessive iron absorption in the gut)

    • Hemosiderosis (excessive iron deposits in the body’s tissues)

    • Hemolytic anemia

    • Pernicious anemia

    • Iron supplements can distort the results of certain medical tests

  • Don’t miss appointments with the prescriber. Regular visits are required to monitor therapy and spot possible side effects.

  • Before taking Fusion Plus, tell the prescriber if you have:

    • Stomach or intestinal problems

    • Diabetes

    • An active infection

    • Porphyria

    • Any other medical condition

  • Iron typically turns stools dark or tar-black. This is normal but easily confused with internal bleeding. If there are other symptoms, contact a healthcare professional.

Fusion Plus interactions

  • Before taking Fusion Plus, tell the prescriber about all the drugs and supplements you take on a regular basis, particularly:

    • Antibiotics

    • Fluoxetine

    • Phenytoin

    • Capecitabine

  • Tell doctors treating you about Fusion Plus before they prescribe new medications. Iron supplements can block the body’s absorption of other drugs, reducing their effectiveness. 

  • Avoid taking Fusion Plus with:

    • Iron injections

    • Antacids

    • Milk

    • Calcium-containing products

    • High-fiber foods

    • Caffeine

Serious side effects

Talk to a healthcare provider if you notice any signs or symptoms of iron poisoning or overdose, including:

  • Nausea, vomiting, pale skin, blue skin

  • Drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, lethargy, seizures, coma

  • Blood in the stools, abdominal pain that won’t stop, vomiting blood, black and tarry stools (along with other symptoms)

  • Nausea, vomiting, pale skin, blue skin

  • Trouble breathing, shallow breathing, wheezing, breathing problems when lying down 

  • Rapid breathing, rapid heart rate

  • Weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • Allergic reaction: Skin rash, hives, itchy skin, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat, trouble breathing

Less serious side effects

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Dark or black stools

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Gas

  • Metallic taste in the mouth
