Gemfibrozil is a generic prescription drug, used along with diet, to reduce fats in the blood (triglycerides) and, as a result, cholesterol. It is prescribed to patients who, because of high triglyceride levels are at risk of developing pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. It is also commonly used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in patients with high triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, and low HDL cholesterol.
Gemfibrozil is not a statin drug, the most commonly prescribed drug for high cholesterol. Unlike a statin, Gemfibrozil works by reducing the liver's production of triglycerides.
