The cost of Zioptan with insurance coverage varies depending on your plan - check with your insurance provider for specific drug coverage and copay details. Zioptan is an eye drop used to decrease intraocular pressure (fluid pressure in the eye) in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It is classified as a prostaglandin analog and works by increasing the flow of natural eye fluids from the eye(s), which lowers the pressure in the eye(s).
The usual dose of Zioptan is one drop in the affected eye or eyes once daily in the evening. Do not use this medicine more than instructed because doing so could interfere with how the medication works.
Wash your hands before using these eye drops. After instilling your eye drops as directed, wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye drops.
Each single-use bottle of Zioptan is for one use only (in one or both eyes). After using, throw the bottle away after one use, even if some medicine remains in the bottle.
Store unopened cartons or foil pouches in the refrigerator. Do not freeze Zioptan. After opening the foil pouch, store it at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Once you open the pouch, use the medication within 28 days.
If you miss a dose of Zioptan, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not use extra eye drops to make up for a missed dose.
Common side effects of Zioptan are local to the eye, such as redness, stinging, itching, dryness, pain, and irritation. There may be eyelash growth or darkening of the eyelashes, color changes of the iris, and darkening of the eyelids and skin around the eyes. The change in color of the eyes, eyelids, and lashes may be gradual but may be permanent, even after the treatment ends—and may occur only in the eye being treated.
Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have an eye infection, injury, vision changes, or if you need to have any type of surgery. Notify your healthcare provider if you have eye pain, redness, itchy or watery eyes, or sensitivity to light.
This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Side effects can be serious, including macular edema (swelling of the retina), uveitis (inflammation inside the eye), iritis (swelling/inflammation of the iris), and cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye). Before using Zioptan, talk to your healthcare provider about potential side effects.
When taking Zioptan, you should not use any other eye drops in the prostaglandin analog class, such as Xalatan (latanoprost), Travatan Z (travoprost), or Lumigan (bimatoprost). Using two drugs from the same class will not help your condition and can cause intraocular pressure to increase.
Zioptan is not appropriate for everyone. Before using Zioptan, tell your healthcare provider about your medical history and any medical conditions. People allergic to tafluprost or similar drugs should not take Zioptan. Also, Zioptan should be used with caution in certain individuals, such as people at risk for macular edema, people with no lens in the eye, and people with active eye inflammation.
Because both drugs are in the same drug class, they work the same way and have similar side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider for professional medical advice and more information about both drugs.
