Is there a generic of Humira?

Humira is a biologic drug, meaning that it is made from living cells. A biosimilar is like a generic, but made to be highly similar to a biologic drug such as Humira. The FDA has approved various biosimilars for Humira. You can consult your healthcare provider for more information and the best treatment option for you.

What is Humira?

Humira is a prescription drug that is used to relieve pain and inflammation from a number of autoimmune conditions, including:

  • Moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis

  • Moderate to severe polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis

  • Crohn's disease

  • Ulcerative colitis

  • Ankylosing spondylitis

  • Plaque psoriasis

  • Psoriatic arthritis

  • Uveitis

  • Hidradenitis suppurativa

Humira works by blocking and reducing the effects of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). TNF-alpha causes inflammation within the body when it sees a threat. However, in people with certain conditions, there may be a higher amount of TNF-alpha within the body. High levels of TNF-alpha can cause excessive inflammation.

Before taking Humira, you should talk to your healthcare provider about any preexisting health conditions you may have. If you are using other medications, you should inform your healthcare provider. This includes prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your healthcare provider to determine if Humira is right for you.

Is Humira considered a steroid?

Although Humira treats inflammatory conditions, it is not a corticosteroid (steroid). It is classified as a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. TNF-blocker medicines like Humira work by suppressing the activity of a substance called tumor necrosis factor, which causes inflammation and contributes to inflammatory diseases.

What doses of Humira are available?

Humira is available as a pen injection and prefilled syringe in various doses. The dose will depend on the condition being treated. For children, the dose will also depend on the child’s age and weight. A common dose for adults is 40 mg injected subcutaneously (under the skin of the thigh or stomach) every other week.

What are the side effects of Humira?

The most common side effects of Humira include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, back pain, and infections, such as upper respiratory infections or urinary tract infections. Humira may also cause injection site reactions, redness, swelling, or itching around the area of injection.

Serious allergic reactions, with symptoms such as hives, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, are possible while using Humira. Seek emergency medical care if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction while using Humira.

Humira should not be started during an active infection. Those with latent tuberculosis (TB) or hepatitis B may experience a reactivation of infection. Signs of infection, such as fever, aches, and persistent cough, should be monitored in those taking Humira. Patients with signs of infection should contact their healthcare provider right away.

Humira may cause serious side effects, including cancers (such as certain types of skin cancer), heart failure, nervous system problems, and liver problems.

This is not a full list of side effects. Consult with your healthcare professional for medical advice before using this drug.

Does Humira interact with anything?

Before taking Humira, tell your health care provider about all of the medications you take, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and vitamins or supplements.

Some Humira interactions include:

  • Kineret (anakinra), Orencia (abatacept), or other TNF blockers such as Remicade (infliximab), Enbrel (etanercept), Cimzia (certolizumab pegol), or Simponi (golimumab): If one of these drugs is combined with Humira, there is an increased risk of serious infections (with no added benefit)

  • Live vaccines: Live vaccines should not be administered while taking Humira

  • Other drugs may need close monitoring, such as Coumadin (warfarin) or cyclosporine

Is there an alternative for Humira?

If you are looking for a less expensive alternative medicine to Humira, you can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about biosimilars.

If you are looking for another TNF blocker besides Humira, other drugs in this class include Remicade (infliximab), Enbrel (etanercept), Cimzia (certolizumab pegol), and Simponi (golimumab). The various TNF blockers have some variation in indications for use, as well as other differences to consider.

Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on the best treatment for you.
