Trulance is an FDA-approved prescription tablet used to treat certain types of bowel problems, including chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). Trulance contains the drug plecanatide. It is designed to work like a peptide produced by the body called uroguanylin. Trulance works primarily in the small intestines to help control and prevent bowel problems.
Trulance works by increasing the amount of fluid in your intestines. This, in turn, helps improve stool texture and make it easier to pass.Trulance can also help promote more regular bowel movements when used as directed. It can help reduce symptoms such as constipation and straining.
Trulance should not be used in persons 18 years and younger. You should let your doctor know if you have a history of stomach or intestinal blockage before using Trulance.
The most common side effect of Trulance is diarrhea. Less common side effects may include gas and bloating, along with nausea, dizziness, and nasal congestion. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience one or more of these side effects. For medical advice regarding other possible side effects, ask a healthcare professional.
You should also let your doctor know if you are allergic to the active ingredient in Trulance as these can lead to serious allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, itching or swelling of the face, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.
Trulance is taken as one pill by mouth once daily, with or without food. Ideally, the pill is swallowed whole, though if you have swallowing issues, you may crush the tablets and mix the powder with applesauce or water as directed by the manufacturer. Trulance may also be given through a nasogastric or gastric feeding tube if needed. It should be taken at roughly the same time each day, and stored at room temperature and away from sources of heat or moisture.
