Levofloxacin is an FDA-approved generic prescription medication used to treat different types of bacterial infections. It is a type of fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria in the body. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections such as the common cold and the flu.
This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet, intravenous solution, and an oral solution. Your doctor will usually assess your medical condition and your response to treatment in order to determine an appropriate dose for you to use.
The tablet version of this drug can be taken by mouth, usually once daily with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids when taking this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Separate antacid use by at least 2 hours of Levofloxacin use. Also, minimize or avoid sun exposure while taking Levofloxacin.
Continue the use of this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if your symptoms disappear after a few days. If you stop using this medication too early, it may result in a return of the infection.
When you fill your prescription for Levofloxacin, you will receive a medication guide that outlines side effects and warnings. Read the medication guide carefully before you start using this drug. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns or questions.
Levofloxacin has a boxed warning, which is the strongest warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The warning is regarding serious side effects that could potentially be irreversible and may occur together and include:
Tendinitis and tendon rupture
Peripheral neuropathy
Central nervous system (CNS) effects (these can range from anxiety to hallucinations and suicidal thoughts and behavior)
Because of the potential for serious side effects, fluoroquinolone drugs (including Levofloxacin) should only be used when no other treatment options are available.
Common side effects of Levofloxacin may include nausea, headaches, diarrhea or constipation, dizziness, or trouble sleeping. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects.
Tell your doctor immediately if you begin to experience serious side effects such as unusual bruising or bleeding, vomiting that doesn't stop, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellowing of the eyes, or dark urine.
If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, get emergency medical help right away.
Before taking Levofloxacin, tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have and any medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Other effects or drug interactions not listed here may also occur while you are taking this medication. Check with your healthcare provider for complete medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Levofloxacin.
