Methimazole is an antithyroid agent that is used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). It works by preventing the thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormone. Methimazole may also be used before a certain type of thyroid surgery or before radioactive iodine treatment. Although this medication can be used by children, their dosage will be based on their weight.

Do not use Methimazole if you are allergic to it or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before taking Methimazole, tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you may have, especially if you have liver disease, a blood cell disorder, or a weakened immune system. If you are pregnant or become pregnant while taking Methimazole you should tell your doctor immediately as this medication can harm an unborn baby.
