Rogaine is a FDA-approved brand name hair regrowth medication with the active ingredient minoxidil. Generic minoxidil is usually sold as “Hair Regrowth Treatment” under well-known brand names such as CVS, Up & Up, Equate, and Kroger, or “Minoxidil” under familiar brand-names such as Walgreens and Kirkland.
Rogaine is a brand-name, over-the-counter family of topical hair regrowth treatments for hair loss in men and women. These products are sold as Rogaine men’s unscented foam or solution and Rogaine unscented foam or solution for women. Continued use of Rogaine is necessary to maintain hair regrowth because the regrowth produced by Rogaine is temporary; the new hair will die and fall out within weeks or months of discontinuing Rogaine treatments.
The active ingredient in Rogaine, minoxidil, is a vasodilator, that is, a drug that increases the width of blood vessels, and was originally developed as an oral prescription medication to lower blood pressure. One of its side effects, however, was unwanted hair growth. Minoxidil was then repurposed as a topical solution medication to specifically promote hair growth in men with male-pattern baldness.
How minoxidil promotes hair growth is not perfectly understood, but it is believed to enlarge hair follicles and to lengthen the anagen, or "growing," stage of the hair's life cycle. In this way, the hair on a bald spot grows for a longer period of time before it stops growing and falls off.
Rogaine is applied to the center of the affected area of the scalp and spread across the entire affected area. Apply only to dry scalp and hair and do not wash or shampoo the area for four hours. Wash hands after applying Rogaine.
Rogaine's most common side effects are local problems such as irritation, dryness, flaking, and burning on the scalp. Absorption is very rare if Rogaine is applied as directed, but can happen if Rogaine is overused or too much is applied. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, so if it is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, it can decrease blood pressure, increase the heart rate, and cause nausea and vomiting. Allergic reactions are rare. Discontinue the application of Rogaine if you notice allergic reactions such as rash, hives, or trouble breathing. If you experience severe side effects consult your healthcare provider for medical advice as soon as possible.
