The active ingredient in Myleran, busulfan, belongs to a class of drugs called alkylating agents. These drugs interfere with the ability of cancer cells to produce new cancer cells.
Myleran is administered as a daily tablet until leukocyte (white blood cell) counts start to approach normal. White blood cell counts will continue to fall for up to 30 days after discontinuing Myleran. The dose will depend on body weight and the number of leukocytes in the blood.
Most people will experience adverse events when taking Myleran, and these side effects could be severe and health-threatening. The most common side effects of Myleran that are experienced by half or more of patients are nausea, mucositis (swelling in the mouth), loss of appetite, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, headache, insomnia, weakness, high blood sugar, low blood calcium, chills, pain, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, rash, stomach upset, and constipation. Mental and mood changes include anxiety. This is not a complete list of side effects and many additional side effects will be experienced by one in four patients or more.
The most serious side effects of Myleran are adrenal gland problems, heart problems, liver problems, seizures, and electrolyte imbalances.
Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and talk to your doctor if you suspect an allergic reaction.
