What is Myleran?

Myleran is a brand-name prescription drug used as a palliative treatment for a particular type of chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, a cancer of the bone marrow that causes the overproduction of white blood cells. Palliative treatment is intended to reduce symptoms only, not to cure or reverse the cancer.

The active ingredient in Myleran, busulfan, belongs to a class of drugs called alkylating agents. These drugs interfere with the ability of cancer cells to produce new cancer cells.

Myleran is administered as a daily tablet until leukocyte (white blood cell) counts start to approach normal. White blood cell counts will continue to fall for up to 30 days after discontinuing Myleran. The dose will depend on body weight and the number of leukocytes in the blood.
