Percocet is manufactured by Endo Pharmaceuticals. Oxycodone-acetaminophen is the generic version of Percocet.
Percocet is a FDA-approved combination pain medication that is used to soothe moderate to severe pain. It is made up of an opioid (narcotic) pain reliever (oxycodone), and a non-opioid pain reliever (acetaminophen). Oxycodone works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain while acetaminophen may also reduce a fever.
This prescription opioid medication should not be given to patients with known hypersensitivity to oxycodone, acetaminophen or persons who are under 18 years old. You should avoid driving, using machinery, or doing any activity that requires alertness until you can do it safely. Alcohol should also be avoided. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are using marijuana (weed).
Before using this prescription medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have a history of head injury, tumor, seizures, breathing problems, kidney disease, liver disease, mental/mood disorders, personal or family history of substance abuse, stomach/intestinal problems, difficulty urinating, gallbladder disease, or pancreatitis.
To prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Be sure to read your instructions clearly when using Percocet and get sufficient drug information from your doctor or pharmacist on this controlled substance.
Some—but not all—of the side effects that accompany Percocet are black, tarry stools, chills, dark urine, constipation, dizziness, fever, headache, itching, skin rash, light-colored stools, and loss of appetite.
Percocet has a high risk of addiction, abuse, and misuse. This drug is only prescribed when treatment with non-opioid pain-relieving medication has not been tolerated or did not provide enough relief for the patient. Patients may experience withdrawal if they stop taking this drug suddenly, especially if you have used it for a long period or in high doses.
If you stop using this drug and begin to experience symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, thoughts of suicide, watering eyes, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or sudden changes in behavior you may be going through withdrawal and should contact your doctor immediately.
Eating grapefruit and related products can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine. Ask your doctor for medical advice on other side effects or drug interactions you may experience.
