Pimozide is a tranquilizer that works by balancing chemicals in the brain responsible for sending signals between nerves. This slows and partly shuts down certain “circuits” in the brain. The involuntary movements and vocalizations that characterize Tourette's syndrome are believed to result from disorganized activity in the brain, so slowing down the brain helps reduce these symptoms.
Common side effects of Pimozide are sedation, dry mouth, trouble swallowing, dizziness, drowsiness, drooling, muscle stiffness, tremors, shaking, involuntary movements, trouble staying still, shuffling walk, weight gain, upset stomach, constipation, and sore throat.
More serious side effects include extreme muscle stiffness. Long-term continual use of Pimozide often leads to tardive dyskinesia (unusual twitching and involuntary movements). Mental and mood changes include anxiety, restlessness, depression, and nervousness.
Allergic reactions are rare, but discontinue Pimozide if there is any sign of an allergic reaction, such as hives, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your physician about any concerns you may have with side effects.
