Pre-Pen is a brand-name drug skin injection used to test for penicillin allergy. A healthcare provider will perform a puncture or an intradermal test.
In a puncture test, the healthcare provider will apply a drop of Pre-Pen on the skin on the forearm. With a needle, the healthcare provider will create a very small puncture in the skin right below the drop.
For an intradermal test, the healthcare provider will inject Pre-Pen immediately below the skin surface on the upper arm and then inject saline solution.
For either method, signs of an allergic reaction, such as redness, swelling, or itching, will appear in five to 15 minutes.
The most common side effect of Pre-Pen is an allergic reaction at the test site: swelling, redness, and itching. More serious allergic reactions, such as trouble breathing, low blood pressure, and anaphylaxis, are very rare. The patient will be observed before and during the test. If there is a positive test, a tourniquet may be applied and epinephrine administered.
