What is Purixan?

Purixan is a generic prescription drug used as a maintenance therapy for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a common childhood cancer in which the bone marrow makes immature lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. These lymphocytes do not function properly and overwhelm healthy lymphocytes. A “maintenance therapy” is a drug therapy that follows the initial treatment of cancer by radiation treatment or drug treatment. The primary purpose of maintenance therapy is to prevent a relapse of the cancer. The active ingredient in Purixan, mercaptopurine, prevents the cancer cells in the bone marrow from growing or over-producing immature lymphocytes. It does this by preventing the cancer cells from using a substance, purine, critical to the cell's ability to copy its own genetic material to produce new cancer cells or lymphocytes. Purixan is taken as an oral suspension once per day. The dose will depend on various conditions the patient might have.
