What is Retrovir?
Retrovir is a brand-name prescription drug prescribed to patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The active ingredient in Retrovir, zidovudine, reduces the amount of HIV in the body by preventing the virus from producing new virus particles.
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a “retrovirus,” that is, its genetic material has to be translated into DNA to produce new virus particles. Zidovudine is an antiretroviral drug, that is, it prevents the virus from converting its genetic material to DNA. The virus is unable to reproduce itself.
HIV targets white blood cells, the front line of the body's ability to fight off infections. As the immune system deteriorates, the patient becomes susceptible to life-threatening infections and cancers. Because Retrovir reduces the amount of virus in the body, the immune system has a chance to recover.
Retrovir is taken as a tablet, capsule, or syrup twice daily. The dose may vary depending on body weight or secondary conditions. Retrovir may also be administered as an intravenous infusion, typically every 4 hours.
What are the side effects of Retrovir?
The side effects of Retrovir will differ based on how far the HIV infection has advanced. The most common side effects of Retrovir are headache (in 63% of patients, “feeling bad” (malaise, in about 50% of patients), nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, and constipation. The most serious side effects of Retrovir are rare and include low blood cell counts, liver problems, and a potentially severe buildup of lactic acid in the body (lactic acidosis).
Allergic reactions are rare but could be serious, including severe skin reactions that may require hospitalization. Discontinue Retrovir if any allergic symptoms, such as rash, swelling, fever, sore throat, or trouble breathing, are experienced.
