What is Samsca?

Samsca is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat low blood sodium (hyponatremia) in patients who are retaining water that can't be corrected by reducing fluid intake. Low blood sodium is a commonly experienced condition and is caused by drinking too much fluid, which dilutes the sodium in the bloodstream. It's a “too much water” problem easily corrected by reducing fluid intake. Low blood sodium that cannot be corrected by reducing fluid intake is usually caused by congestive heart failure, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, or SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone). All of these conditions result in the kidneys inappropriately reabsorbing water back into the body. Uncorrected low blood sodium can become a medical emergency, causing weakness, muscle spasms, seizures, coma, and death. The active ingredient in Samsca, tolvaptan, prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing water back into the body from urine. This increases the amount of water expelled from the body in the urine. Samsca is taken as a tablet once daily. The first dose must be administered in a hospital because there's a risk of blood sodium levels getting too high. This, too, is a medical emergency that can result in nerve damage, seizures, coma, and death.

Common side effects of Samsca include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, increased urination, increased thirst, dry mouth, dry skin, constipation, weakness, drowsiness, fruity breath, and loss of appetite. The most serious side effect of Samsca is high blood sodium, a potential medical emergency. For this reason, the first dose is always administered in a hospital where blood sodium levels can be monitored. Other serious side effects include dehydration and liver problems. Serious bleeding or blood clotting problems are possible but rare. Allergic reactions are rare but include hives, difficulty breathing, and facial swelling.
