What is Teriparatide? 

Teriparatide is an injectable prescription drug. It is approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the following uses in individuals who cannot take other osteoporosis medications:

  • To treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at high risk of fractures 

  • To increase bone mass in men with certain types of osteoporosis who are at high risk of fractures

  • To treat osteoporosis in men and women who take steroid medication and are at high risk of fractures

Teriparatide works by helping the body build new bone and increasing bone strength and density. 

Teriparatide is administered as an injection under the skin of the abdomen or thigh once daily as directed. The daily dose is 20 mcg. Your healthcare provider will teach you how to prepare and use this medicine. Teriparatide should be stored in the refrigerator until ready to use. Keep out of reach of children.

What are the side effects of Teriparatide?

Common side effects of Teriparatide include:

  • Pain 

  • Nausea 

  • Joint aches 

  • Weakness

  • Back spasms

  • Leg cramps

  • Heartburn 

  • Dizziness

  • Depression 

  • Injection site reactions such as redness, pain, swelling, bruising, itching, or slight bleeding

Serious side effects may occur in rare cases and may include:

  • Bone cancer

  • High calcium levels 

  • Worsening of kidney stones

  • Decreased blood pressure when you stand up

Patients with symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, should get emergency medical help.

  • You have high calcium levels

If you stop taking Teriparatide, you will likely lose bone mass. If you need to stop taking this medication, your healthcare provider may prescribe another type of medication to prevent bone loss. You can also ask your healthcare provider for tips to increase bone density, such as taking calcium and vitamin D and exercising.
