What is Trulance: Uses, Warnings & Interactions

Trulance is a brand-name prescription drug for adults with more chronic forms of constipation. Its active ingredient, plecanatide, is a powerful drug that increases water in the large intestine and speeds up intestinal contractions. Doses are taken once per day. The most common and potentially the most serious side effect is diarrhea.

What is Trulance used for?

Trulance treats constipation in people diagnosed with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) or irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).

How to take Trulance

  • Take this medicine as prescribed. Do not change the dose.

  • Please read the Medication Guide that comes with this drug.

  • Take one dose each day.

  • Trulance can be taken with or without food.

  • Swallow the tablet whole.

  • For people who cannot swallow a tablet, the tablet can be crushed and mixed with applesauce.

    • Crush the tablet into a powder in a clean container.

    • Mix it with one teaspoon of applesauce at room temperature.

    • Swallow the entire mixture immediately.

  • The tablet can also be dissolved in water and taken that way.

    • Put the tablet in a clean cup.

    • Pour one ounce of room-temperature water into the cup.

    • Swirl the tablet around in the water for at least 10 seconds.

    • Swallow the entire glass of water right away.

    • If any powder or tablet is remaining, add another ounce of water to the cup. Swirl it around for 10 seconds and swallow it right away.

  • Store Trulance tablets in their original container at room temperature in a dry place.

  • You can remove the polyester coil that is in the bottle, but keep the small packet in the bottle. It will protect the pills from moisture.

What to do if you miss a dose of Trulance

  • If a dose is missed, skip it.

  • Take the next dose at its regular time.

  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Trulance contraindications

  • This medicine is not right for everyone.

  • Do not use it if you have had an allergic reaction to plecanatide or if you have a bowel or stomach blockage. 

  • Trulance is contraindicated in children younger than 6 years old.

  • The FDA has warned doctors not to use Trulance in children younger than 18 years of age.

Trulance warnings

  • Tell any doctor or other healthcare provider who treats you that you are using Trulance. 

  • Regular checkups are required, so keep all appointments with healthcare providers.

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have any other stomach or bowel problems.

  • The most common side effect of Trulance is diarrhea. Stop taking Trulance doses and contact the prescribing healthcare provider if diarrhea is severe.

  • Trulance does not have any known drug interactions.

  • Even so, tell the prescriber about all the drugs and supplements you’re taking before starting Trulance.

Talk to a doctor if you notice any signs or symptoms of a possible serious side effect, including:

  • Severe, persistent, or watery diarrhea

Less serious side effects

  • Mild diarrhea
