Xulane is a brand-name prescription drug. There is no generic alternative currently available.
Xulane is an FDA-approved prescription hormone patch used to prevent pregnancy. This drug contains a combination of two hormones: progestin (norelgestromin) and estrogen (ethinyl estradiol). This patch works mainly by preventing ovulation during your menstrual cycle. It also causes vaginal fluid to become thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg, and it changes the uterus lining to prevent fertilized eggs from getting attached. As long as a fertilized egg is unable to attach to the uterus wall, the lining of the uterus will shed, and menstruation occurs.
Xulane does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia. Talk to your doctor about effective methods of preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
This birth control drug comes in the form of a medicated transdermal patch. The Xulane patch should be applied to a layer of dry skin on your upper outer arm, buttock, or abdomen where your clothing will not rub against it. This patch should not be attached to your breasts or any area of irritated skin. Always remove and discard the old patch, then use a new patch, in a new location, when changing your patch. Do not reuse old patches. Avoid applying lotions, creams, oils, or make-up on the patch site since it may cause the patch to peel off easily. Check the patch daily to make sure it is sticking correctly. Xulane is worn for 3 weeks on (changing the patch weekly), and then one week off. Your doctor can demonstrate how the patch works and how to change the patch. Always remember to remove your patch before applying a new one.
Liver problems and high blood pressure can occur. Tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have, and all of the medications you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, and vitamins, so your doctor can make sure Xulane is safe for you.
Xulane has a black box warning, which is the strongest warning required by the FDA. This warning states:
Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from hormonal birth control, such as Xulane. The risk is higher as age increases, especially over 35 years, and with the number of cigarettes smoked. Women who are over 35 years old and smoke should not use hormonal birth control, including Xulane.
Xulane cannot be used in women who have a BMI ? 30 mg/m2 because of a higher risk of cardiovascular/clotting events.
Xulane exposes users to a 60 percent higher amount of estrogen than a typical birth control pill, which can increase the risk of side effects. Common side effects resulting from the use of Xulane may include irritation at the site of application, vomiting, nausea, bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, mood changes, and swelling of the ankles. You may also experience vaginal bleeding between periods, especially during the first few months of use. If any of the side effects persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor immediately.
Xulane may also lead to high blood pressure and possibly blood clots. Monitor your blood pressure regularly while you are using this drug and inform your doctor if your results are consistently higher than normal. Seek emergency medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms: leg pain; shortness of breath; vision loss; chest pain or pressure; sudden, severe headache; arm or leg weakness or numbness; difficulty speaking; or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Other effects not listed here may also occur while you're taking Xulane. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for medical advice on Xulane before using it.
