How much does Zanaflex cost without insurance?

At most pharmacies, the cash price of Zanaflex will be $4,283.31 for 60, 8mg capsules of Zanaflex for uninsured patients. That same prescription, however, may only cost $4.46 for 30, 4mg tablets of generic Zanaflex using a SingleCare prescription savings card. SingleCare is accepted at major pharmacies throughout the country, such as CVS, Target, Longs Drugs, Walmart, Walgreens, Duane Reade, and others.

How much does Zanaflex cost with insurance?

Does Medicare cover Zanaflex and how much does it cost?

Some Medicare insurance plans may cover the cost of Zanaflex in either tablet or capsule form. However, the generic version of Zanaflex, tizanidine, is often preferred by Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans. Is there a generic of Zanaflex?

Zanaflex is a prescription brand-name drug taken in tablet or capsule form. A generic version of Zanaflex is available in both tablet and capsule form. Generic manufacturers include Zydus Pharmaceuticals, Apotex, Novast Laboratories, and many others. 

The tablet and capsule formulations of Zanaflex are not interchangeable. Zanaflex tablets cannot be substituted for Zanaflex capsules and vice versa.

What is Zanaflex?

Zanaflex (tizanidine) is a short-acting muscle relaxant that relieves spasticity (involuntary contractions, spasms, or tensing of muscles). It is prescribed to treat patients with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, or traumatic brain injury who regularly experience muscle spasms or rigidity.

Spasticity occurs when nerves in the spinal cord become “disconnected” from the control centers in the brain. Zanaflex works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles to reduce involuntary muscle contractions.

Zanaflex is available in both a tablet and capsule form. The capsule form has been shown to work more quickly than the tablet, so a Zanaflex or generic tizanidine tablet cannot be substituted for a Zanaflex capsule. This medication should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. 

Zanaflex is sometimes prescribed off-label to treat symptoms of fibromyalgia.

What are the side effects of Zanaflex?

Common side effects of Zanaflex include, but are not limited to, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, weakness, constipation, and nervousness. Other possible side effects include urinary tract infection, abnormal liver function tests, speech problems, sore throat, and runny nose.

Serious side effects of Zanaflex may include low blood pressure (hypotension), liver injury, hallucinations, and kidney problems. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while using Zanaflex. 

Allergic reactions are rare but may present as certain signs and symptoms, such as trouble breathing, hives, and swelling of the face or throat.
