Before taking Escitalopram, tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have, as well as all of the medications you take. This includes prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Your doctor will ensure that Escitalopram is safe for you to take, and that it does not interact with any other medications you take. Do not take Escitalopram if you have taken an MAOI drug, such as phenelzine or selegiline, within 14 days.
Take Escitalopram exactly as directed by your doctor. Carefully read the prescription label and all accompanying information leaflets or medication guides. Ask your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
Store Escitalopram at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep out of sight and out of reach of children and pets.
Take Escitalopram at about the same time every day. You can take Escitalopram with or without food. In the event of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medication to try to make up for a missed dose.
For the liquid version of Escitalopram, measure with a medication-measuring device. Do not use kitchen measuring utensils.
It may take several weeks to see an improvement in symptoms. Do not stop taking Escitalopram suddenly, as withdrawal symptoms can occur. If for any reason you stop taking Escitalopram, your physician will provide you with a tapering schedule so you can slowly and safely stop taking Escitalopram.
Children who take Escitalopram will be monitored for growth.
Common side effects of Escitalopram include headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, sexual problems, sleepiness or trouble sleeping, dry mouth, sweating, dizziness, appetite loss, and abnormal dreams.

These symptoms can include fever, burning eyes, sore throat, skin pain, red or purple rash, or blistering or peeling skin.
Escitalopram increases the amount of serotonin in the body. Too much serotonin (serotonin syndrome) can cause moderate to severe side effects, such as fever, agitation, overactive reflexes, dilated pupils, hallucinations, and sweating. Serotonin syndrome is more likely to occur with a dosage change or when two or more medications that affect serotonin levels are taken together.
Escitalopram has a black box warning, which is the most serious warning required by the FDA. Like any antidepressant, Escitalopram can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Family and caregivers should monitor the patient closely for any changes in mood or behavior, or suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Report any changes to the doctor right away, or get emergency help if needed.
Escitalopram is not a controlled substance or addictive drug, but may have withdrawal symptoms when discontinued abruptly. Do not suddenly stop taking Escitalopram.
