Anucort-HC is a prescription suppository that treats anal and rectal swelling and discomfort due to hemorrhoids, damage to the lining of the rectum caused by cancer radiation therapy (factitial proctitis), swelling and sores in the intestines (ulcerative colitis or cryptitis), or other inflammatory conditions of the anus or rectum.
The active ingredient in Anucort-HC, hydrocortisone acetate, belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids, which prevent the body from producing chemicals (prostaglandins and leukotrienes) that cause swelling and inflammation. When absorbed into the rectal lining, Anucort-HC reduces the swelling that causes pain, irritation, itching, and soreness.
Anucort-HC is administered as a suppository twice daily morning and night for two weeks. More serious conditions may require Anucort-HC to be taken three times a day for up to six weeks.
The most common side effects of Anucort-HC are irritation, stinging, burning, rash, and other allergic site reactions. Hydrocortisone may cause rectal burning, rectal pain, rectal bleeding, or dryness.
