Cetraxal is a brand-name antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the outer and middle ear caused by either staphylococcus or pseudomonas bacteria. Cetraxal is applied as ear drops twice daily for seven days.
The active ingredient in Cetraxal, ciprofloxacin, belongs to a class of antibiotics known as quinolones. Ciprofloxacin kills bacteria by corrupting their genetic material, preventing them from carrying out essential cellular functions and from dividing into new bacteria cells. Quinolones, however, have potentially serious side effects.
What are the side effects of Cetraxal?
The most common side effects of Cetraxal are site reactions such as itching, burning, and pain, but these effects often clear up in a few minutes. Other common side effects include fungal infection and headache.
Because Cetraxal is only applied topically and not ingested or injected, the most serious side effects of ciprofloxacin are rarely experienced.
