Is there a generic of Nikki?

Nikki is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The generic version of this drug is drospirenone-ethinyl estradiol.

What is Nikki?

Nikki is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to prevent pregnancy. This medication contains a combination of ethinyl estradiol, an estrogen, and drospirenone, a progestin. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg, or ovulation, during a menstrual cycle. It can also change the consistency of cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. If a fertilized egg is unable to attach to the uterus, it is passed out of the body. This medication may also be used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder and acne in certain women.

Nikki comes in the form of an oral tablet that can be taken once daily, with or without meals. Taking this medication after your evening meal or before you go to sleep may help decrease an upset stomach and nausea. Consult your healthcare provider and follow the instructions provided on the product packaging before you start using this medication.

It is recommended to use a non-hormonal form of birth control, such as condoms or spermicide, during the first week of Nikki use. This will help prevent pregnancy until the medication has enough time to work. If you start this medication on the first day of your period, then you do not need to use back-up birth control during the first week.

What are the side effects of Nikki?

Nikki may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles, or weight changes. You may also experience vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting), especially during the first few months of use. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience side effects that persist or worsen.

This medication may increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to serious cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes. Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart disease or smoking before using Nikki.

Women who have a history of breast cancer should avoid the use of Nikki. This medication may increase the risk of breast and cervical cancer in some women.

Tell your doctor if you have a history of high blood pressure, liver problems, or depression before taking Nikki. Consult your healthcare provider for other possible side effects, warnings, and precautions before taking this medication.
