Colazal is a brand-name prescription drug chemically similar to aspirin that is used to relieve pain and swelling and other symptoms of ulcerative colitis, an autoimmune inflammatory disease that causes swelling and sores in the inner lining of the colon and rectum.
The active ingredient in Colazal, balsalazide, blocks substances produced by white blood cells in the colon's lining that cause inflammation (swelling). Colazal is similar to aspirin, but does not thin the blood like aspirin does.
Colazal is generally taken as three capsules three times a day for eight weeks. Before you take Colazal, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Tell your doctor about allergies to medications. You should not take Colazal if you are allergic to aspirin.
Common side effects of Colazal include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, loss of appetite, joint pain, sore throat, fever, runny nose, or cold symptoms. Severe, but rare, side effects of Colazal can include liver problems, kidney problems, and anemia. Colazal may sometimes worsen the ulcerative colitis it is treating. Notify your doctor if your symptoms worsen.
Allergic reactions are rare and can include hives, trouble breathing, and facial swelling. Seek emergency medical treatment immediately if allergic reactions are experienced. Severe skin reactions are also possible in rare cases. Get emergency medical help right away if you experience a red or purple rash, blistering or peeling skin, burning eyes, sore throat, or fever.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your prescribing physician about what side effects to expect and how to address them.
