Dantrolene is a generic prescription drug used to manage malignant hyperthermia, a rare reaction to anesthetics that causes muscle rigidity, high fever, fast heart rate, and muscle breakdown. Untreated malignant hyperthermia is fatal in 75% of cases. Dantrolene is also used off-label to treat Neuroleptic Malignancy Syndrome, or NMH, a rare and life-threatening reaction to antipsychotic drugs. Dantrolene is usually administered by healthcare professionals in a hospital or emergency room setting and is not available for purchase at consumer pharmacies. Dantrolene treatment may begin one to three days before surgery and continue one to three days after, but only very rarely will a patient fill a prescription at a pharmacy. Dantrolene normally retails for $104.61, but SingleCare offers a free Dantrolene coupon that reduces Dantrolene's cost to $35.49. Ask if the hospital administering Dantrolene accepts SingleCare discount cards.

Dantrolene is almost never sold by local pharmacies or purchased by patients. Instead, it is purchased by hospitals from specialty pharmacies and administered by a healthcare professional or fulfilled at a hospital pharmacy.
The retail price of Dantrolene without insurance averages $104.61. If the hospital accepts a SingleCare discount card, you pay only $35.49 for that same Dantrolene prescription.
Copay costs of Dantrolene vary depending on your insurance plan. When used as part of a procedure, the cost of Dantrolene may be reimbursed as a medical benefit and included with the copay cost for the procedure.

Dantrolene is a generic prescription drug used to treat or prevent malignant hyperthermia, a rare condition that is provoked by certain anesthesia gases or by succinylcholine, an intravenous muscle relaxant used with general anesthesia.
One in 5,000 to 50,000 people are born susceptible to malignant hyperthermia. When an MH-susceptible patient is given certain types of inhaled anesthetics in an emergency room or during surgery, the muscles release stored calcium, causing them to contract. The muscle contractions raise the body's temperature dramatically and increase the acid content within the blood. The heart rate and breathing speed up and carbon dioxide builds up in the bloodstream. Most importantly, muscles begin to rapidly break down, including the heart muscle, and organs, such as the kidneys, begin to fail. The mortality rate for untreated malignant hyperthermia is between 70 and 80 percent.
Anesthetists, emergency room physicians, and surgeons are well-trained in malignant hyperthermia even though it's a rare condition. They will quickly diagnose the condition. The anesthesia will be immediately terminated and Dantrolene will be administered as a continuous intravenous infusion until the symptoms fade. Dantrolene is a muscle relaxant that prevents the release of calcium in the muscles. The mortality rate of malignant hyperthermia with Dantrolene treatment is 5%.
After a metabolic hyperthermia incident, patients will receive Dantrolene capsules over the next one to three days in four divided doses per day.
Dantrolene capsules may also be prescribed to patients who are known to be MH-susceptible for daily administration two to four days before general anesthesia. However, the standard procedure for MH-susceptible patients is to flush the anesthesia machine and use inhaled anesthetics that do not trigger malignant hyperthermia.
Dantrolene is sometimes used off-label to treat severe, life-threatening cases of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMH), a reaction to antipsychotic drugs that also includes muscle rigidity and fever caused by the release of calcium in the muscles.
Dantrolene is used in emergency, life-threatening situations for a short period of time, so side effects are difficult to distinguish from problems due to the medical crisis it treats. Dantrolene has been administered short-term to volunteers to give a clearer picture of side effects.
Dantrolene is a muscle relaxant so the most common side effects are weakness, drowsiness, low energy, fatigue, and dizziness. Other common side effects include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and headache.
Dantrolene is only used for a short time, so severe side effects are very rare. These include swelling in the lungs (pulmonary edema), blood clots, anemia, and heart failure.
Dantrolene is toxic to the liver, so it is only used in the short-term. Long-term use may cause liver damage, water on the lungs (pleural effusion), and seizures.
Allergic reactions are possible.
