Most insurance plans cover an annual flu vaccine, so FluMist should be covered when administered by a healthcare professional, including going to a local pharmacy. However, this coverage may depend on the insurance plan. FluMist was recently approved to be given at home, but this option will not be available until the 2025-2026 flu season.
Each individual insurance formulary is unique. The cost of FluMist with insurance coverage varies according to your plan. Verify FluMist coverage and copay specifics with your insurance company.
If your insurance does not offer coverage for FluMist, you can use a SingleCare card to save money on FluMist and pay $38.00 for 1, 1 liquid plas cont.
FluMist is a brand-name medication manufactured by MedImmune. There is no generic version of FluMist available at this time.
FluMist is an intranasal flu vaccine that is administered into the nostril. It is approved for those ages 2 to 49 years. For those ages two through eight years, a second dose may be administered one month later, depending on what the healthcare provider recommends. This is a live vaccine, so caution is advised for those who have recently received any other live vaccines or take immunocompromising medications.
Common side effects of FluMist include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and a fever higher than 100°F.
Other side effects include decreased appetite or feeling not hungry, feeling irritable, feeling tired or weak, cough, headache, muscle pain, and chills.
There is an FDA reporting system for any additional side effects that are experienced: Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
Although rare, a serious allergic reaction could occur within a few minutes to one hour after getting a FluMist dose. It is important to monitor for signs of an allergic reaction after receiving FluMist. Side effects of a serious allergic reaction include hives, severe flushing of the skin, trouble swallowing or speaking, trouble breathing or wheezing, swelling of the face, lips, eyes, tongue, or throat, chest discomfort or tightness, dizziness or fainting, severe stomach cramps or pain, vomiting, or diarrhea. If any of these occur, seek medical advice right away. If a healthcare provider administered FluMist, they should monitor you and can help if there is an allergic reaction.
FluMist will be available to self-administer at home. However, a caregiver must give the dose to those ages 2 through 17 years.
One dose is given over two sprays in each nostril.
FluMist should be stored in the fridge in its original container and protected from light. It should not be used if it has been frozen, dropped, or damaged; the carton has been opened or appears tampered with; or it is past its expiration date.
Once removed from the fridge, FluMist should be used within 12 hours. Remove the cap and place the sprayer tip inside one nostril, keeping your head in an upright position. The entire white tip should not be inserted in the nostril and the sprayer tip does not need to be inserted far. Push the plunger as quickly as possible until it stops at the dose divider clip. There is no need to inhale or sniff, so you can breathe normally. Wipe away any liquid that drips from the nose with a tissue. Pinch and remove the dose divider clip from the plunger while holding onto the sprayer body. Then, instill the next half of the dose into the other nostril. The used sprayer should be returned through the return shipment program. The instructions are provided with FluMist.
Before getting FluMist, it is important to discuss all other medical conditions you may have, medications that you take, both prescription and over-the-counter, and if you have recently received or plan to receive other vaccinations with a healthcare provider. Inform them if you are currently wheezing (or have a history of wheezing for those younger than five years of age), have asthma, have had Guillain-Barré syndrome, have a weakened immune system or live with someone with a weakened immune system, have problems with your heart, kidneys, or lungs, have diabetes, are pregnant or nursing, or take antivirals for the treatment of influenza.
FluMist should not be given to those with a severe allergy to eggs or any other inactive ingredients in the vaccine, those who have previously had a severe allergic reaction to influenza vaccines, and those ages two through 17 years who take aspirin.
FluMist contains three influenza virus strains that are weakened: A(H1Na), A(H3N2), and B Victoria lineage. FluMist Quadrivalent carries the same influenza strains and an additional strain: B Yamagata lineage. Talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacy to see which FluMist formulation they carry.
