What is Fluoridex?
Fluoridex is a prescription high fluoride toothpaste for patients who have a high risk of developing cavities or tooth decay. This includes young children, teenagers, and older adults whose gums have receded. This also includes people living in areas where drinking water does not have added fluoride. Fluoridex and similar high-fluoride toothpaste reduce the risk of cavities by 43% over normal fluoride toothpaste.
The active ingredient in Fluoridex is sodium fluoride but in prescription-level quantities. Bones and teeth get much of their strength and durability from sodium fluoride. When topically applied to teeth, sodium fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and repairs cavities when they first form.
Over-the-counter toothpastes contain between 1,350 to 1,500 parts per million of sodium fluoride. High fluoride prescription toothpastes contain 2,500 ppm (2500 toothpastes) and 5,000 ppm (5000 or 1.1% sodium fluoride toothpastes) of sodium fluoride.
Fluoridex is applied like any other toothpaste. Fluoridex is not suitable for children under the age of six (children with baby teeth only).
What are the side effects of Fluoridex?
Used as directed, Fluoridex will not cause side effects. Allergic reactions have not been reported. However, Fluoridex, like non-prescription fluoride toothpaste, will have side effects if swallowed. Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, drooling, diarrhea, numbness, tingling, seizures, and muscle weakness. As with all toothpaste, do not swallow or overuse Fluoridex, but spit it out after use.
