Heather is a branded generic prescription drug manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Inc. A branded generic drug is a generic drug (so it’s less expensive) that has a proprietary name, but is not the brand name or the chemical name.

What is Heather?

This medication is used to prevent pregnancy. It is commonly referred to as the "minipill" because it does not contain any estrogen. The active ingredient in this medication is norethindrone, which is a hormone that prevents pregnancy by making vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg. It also changes the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. This medication may be less effective than a combination hormone birth control because it does not consistently prevent ovulation.

This medication is available in the form of an oral tablet. It is taken once daily. Pick a time of day that is easy for you to remember, and take this pill at the same time every day. Using Heather after your evening meal or at bedtime may help to reduce the chances of developing an upset stomach or nausea. It is very important that you use this medication at the same time each day, 24 hours apart.

Pregnancy is more likely if you miss pills, start a new pack late, or take your pill at a different time of day than usual. If you miss a pill, or take it three or more hours later than usual, take the pill as soon as you remember, then resume your normal schedule. Use a backup method of birth control such as a condom and/or spermicide every time you have sex for the next 48 hours. If you are not sure how many pills you have missed or what to do, contact your healthcare professional for guidance.

What are the side effects of Heather?

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, headaches, bloating, breast tenderness, or weight gain. Vaginal bleeding between periods or spotting may also occur. Consult with your doctor if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.

Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as itching, rash, swelling in your face or throat, severe dizziness, tightness in your chest, or trouble breathing.

Talk with your doctor or healthcare provider for professional medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Heather as this is not a complete list of side effects.
