Sharobel is a generic women's birth control pill with norethindrone, a naturally occurring female hormone (progestin). Sharobel helps prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation) and changes the cervical and uterine linings to prevent sperm movement and fertilized egg attachment.
Progestin-only birth control pills are often called “mini-pills” because they don't combine the progestin with another female hormone, estrogen, as other birth control pills do. Though less effective than standard birth control pills, mini-pills are prescribed to women who should not take estrogen because they are nursing an infant, smoke, have high blood pressure, or are over the age of 35. The risk of pregnancy is high, so it is important to use other forms of birth control while taking Sharobel.
Sharobel is taken daily in a 28-day sequence. It is a “monophasic” oral contraceptive, that is, the dose of each active ingredient remains the same throughout the 28-day sequence. The final seven “reminder” tablets, however, are placebos to promote menstruation at the end of the monthly cycle, when pregnancy is no longer a risk.
Common side effects of Sharobel include but are not limited to swelling, bloating, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, headache, breast tenderness, menstrual changes, and vaginal itching and discharge. Mood changes are common and include depression and trouble sleeping. Allergic reactions to Sharobel are extremely rare but include rashes and hives.
