Tobramycin is an FDA-approved generic prescription drug used to treat bacterial eye infections. It belongs to a group of drugs called aminoglycoside antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Tobramycin is only effective in the treatment of bacterial eye infections. It will not work for other types of eye infections. Do not use antibiotic medications without your doctor's approval. The overuse or unnecessary use of antibiotics can lead to decreased effectiveness.
Tobramycin comes in the form of an eye drop. This medication is instilled into your affected eye(s) by tilting your head back, pulling your eyelid(s) open, and squeezing a drop into your eye from the medication bottle. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface. Do not wear contact lenses while you have signs and symptoms of a bacterial eye infection.
Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition. Use this medication regularly as directed in order to maximize its effectiveness. Tobramycin should be continued until the full prescription is complete even if the symptoms of your eye infection have cleared up. If you stop this medication too early, it may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of your infection.
Tobramycin may cause unwanted side effects such as eye itching, swelling, or redness. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients who use this medication do not experience any side effects.
Serious allergic reactions to this drug are unlikely. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as rashes, itching, swelling of the face or tongue, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Tobramycin as this is not a complete list of side effects.
