What is Levsin?

Levsin is an FDA-approved brand-name prescription medication used to treat a variety of stomach and intestinal problems such as cramps and irritable bowel symptoms. It may also be used to treat other conditions such as cramping caused by kidney stones and gallstones, Parkinson's disease and bowel control problems. Levsin works by reducing acid production in the stomach, slowing down natural movements of your gut, and relaxing muscles in many organs such as the stomach, intestines, and bladder.

Levsin belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics/antispasmodics. It comes in the form of an oral tablet or sublingual tablet that is usually used every 4 hours as needed. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed without consulting your doctor.

Before taking Levsin, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Certain people cannot take Levsin, such as people with urination problems, stomach or bowel obstruction, severe ulcerative colitis, glaucoma, or myasthenia gravis. Also tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Certain medications interact with Levsin. For example, antacids lower your body's ability to absorb this medication. If you need to use antacids, take them after meals and use Levsin before meals. Avoid alcohol when taking Levsin. Avoid driving until you know how Levsin affects you.

What are the side effects of Levsin?

Common Levsin side effects include dry mouth and eyes, difficulty urinating, constipation, confusion, memory problems, nervousness, fast heart rate, flushing, blurred vision, headaches, sexual problems, dizziness, impaired coordination, and drowsiness.

Serious allergic reactions are rare—symptoms of difficulty breathing, hives, and/or swelling around the face, lips, tongue, or throat require emergency medical attention.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects such as fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty urinating, slurred speech, loss of coordination, hallucinations, or eye pain.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
