What is Lomotil?

Lomotil (diphenoxylate and atropine) is a combination prescription drug used along with appropriate fluid and electrolyte therapy to treat severe diarrhea. Diarrhea is characterized by frequent bowel movements and loose, watery stools. Severe diarrhea can cause life-threatening dehydration.

The active ingredient in Lomotil, diphenoxylate, is an opioid that slows down movement in the intestines and reduces the frequency and intensity of intestinal muscle contractions. As a result, waste moves through the intestines more slowly so the body has more time to absorb water and nutrients.
