Orencia Clickject (abatacept) is a prescription drug supplied in an auto-injector, the Clickject. It is prescribed to patients with rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, or psoriatic arthritis (arthritis due to psoriasis). All these forms of arthritis are caused by the body's immune system attacking healthy cells in the joints.
The active ingredient in Orencia is a protein that inhibits the activation of white blood cells, called T-cells, that attack the healthy tissues in joints.
The Clickject allows patients to self-inject Orencia once per week. Each Clickject holds a single dose. They are stored in the refrigerator and must be allowed to warm in the open air to room temperature (about 30 minutes) before injection.
Orencia Clickject suppresses the body's immune system, so infections are the most common side effect of Orencia Clickject and occur in over half the patients. They include upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, flu, bronchitis, and sinus infections. Consult your doctor immediately if you have an infection or symptoms of an infection. Orencia Clickject also reduces the effectiveness of vaccinations, and live vaccines may cause serious illnesses.
Temporary site reactions to the injection are very common and include redness, irritation, pain, and bruising. Orencia Clickject can be used in the same general area, but choose a different spot in that area to minimize site reactions.
Other common side effects of Orencia Clickject include, but are not limited to, headache, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, dizziness, flushing, back pain, and cold symptoms. Allergic reactions are rare, but get medical attention if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling, and trouble breathing.
